Ok, so you’re in the store looking to buy a new helmet. You’ve found the colour that works and you like the style, great start. Now before you rush to the counter you need to check a few things out.

Australian Standards and Helmets

Turn the helmet upside down and look for the Australian Standards sticker, if the helmet is an approved one it will definitely have this sticker on the inside of the helmet. If there is no sticker, the helmet has not been safety approved and there is no guarantee that it meets the minimum safety requirements for bicycle helmets.

Why is this important?

If a helmet is AS approved, it means that the helmet has been tested and passes all safety standards requirements providing the user with a guaranteed level of protection

Just because it looks like a bike helmet doesn’t mean it is a safe helmet.

Step 3

Does it suit the intended purpose?

There are many different styles of bicycle helmets and it is important that you choose a helmet that is going to suit your cycling needs.

Think about where you will be riding, for how long, are you riding for exercise or leisure, do you get hot or perspire easily? These are all relevant to finding the right helmet for you.

AS standards will guarantee the overall quality of the helmet, but they do not guarantee the shape of the helmet will fit your head correctly. If the helmet doesn’t fit securely on your head or feels uncomfortable then it is not the right one for you. How does it look?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a helmet that looks great. Maybe it needs to match the colour of your bike, your outfit or even your eyes. Do not be embarrassed about this, after all, if colour and looks weren’t important you wouldn’t have so many to choose from to begin with.

Just remember, you are buying a safety product and safety should always be your priority so make colour and looks the last important decision that you make, not the most important one!
