Any bike helmet sold in Australia must comply with the Australian Standards AS/NZS 2063:2008 as of the 30 June 2011. When buying a bike helmet, ensure it has a red and white sticker with the above numbers on it.
When choosing your bike helmet, ensure it fits correctly. There is little benefit to wearing a bike helmet that is too big as it will fall off when it is needed. Have a look at some of our articles here about sizing and choosing the correct fitting bike helmet for you:

In Australia it is illegal to ride a bicycle without a Bike Helmet. Whether you are riding on the road, footpath, park or MTB track, you must have a helmet on your head, fastened up, at all times. Any child seated in a baby seat or bicycle trailer, must also be wearing an Australian Standards Approved Helmet correctly buckled up also. In QLD, you will get a fine of $100 if you are caught cycling without a helmet on, regardless of where you are riding, or how old you are… Here at Bums on Bikes, we sell numerous helmets for under $70… you do the math.
A good bike helmet will normally have an outer shell of hard fiberglass or similar material, which is resistant to impact. The inside of the helmets are made from stiff polystyrene material, which will act as a shock absorber. Don’t confuse foam padding with this liner. Padding will increase comfort, but will not increase the protection level.
