HYBRID BIKE

What is a hybrid bike? And why should you ride it?

A Hybrid bike is a bike that combines characteristics of both Road Bikes and Mountain Bikes. The Hybrid gives you the best of both worlds, with comfort, strength and speed. Also known as a General-purpose Utility bicycle, the Hybrid allows you to ride on a variety of terrains, safely and confidently.

Features of a Hybrid Bike include:

➢ Upright frame offering a more comfortable riding position which reduces back and neck strain, and also gives the rider more control over the bike.
➢ Stronger frame which enables you to carry more weight (rider and cargo). This also helps absorb the day to day punishment of bumps, potholes etc.
➢ Wider tyres similar to a mountain bike provide better traction and stability on all surfaces.
➢ Higher tyre pressures like that of a Road Bike reducing rolling resistance making the bike feel light to ride and easy to control.
➢ Lighter rims, components and taller gearing for increased speed.

Due to the popularity of the Hybrid, manufacturers have created four different categories so there is a Hybrid to cater for everybody’s needs.

City Bike: The City Bike is basically a Commuter Bike that has being optimized to handle the strain of commuting through the city. You will notice it has, Mountain Bike size wheels – 26inch – with wider, 1.5-1.95inches, thick treaded tyres, designed to help shrug off common road hazards found while commuting through the city. The City Bike’s sturdy frame, similar to the Mountain Bike, makes it capable of handling potholes, drains, and jumping off roadside curbs.

Cross Bike: The Cross Bike has a frame some what similar to that of a Racing/Touring Bike. You will generally find the Cross Bike will come with flat handle bars, providing you with a more comfortable, upright riding position. Cross Bikes are fitted with 700C wheels; however they do have wider tyres with thicker tread than that of the Racing/Touring Bikes. This extra tread and width enables you to handle rougher terrain you may find on bike paths and unpaved areas.

Comfort Bike: The Comfort Bike generally has the frame of a Mountain Bike, modified with a taller head tube, which gives the rider a more comfortable upright riding position. Like the name suggests, Comfort Bikes are built for rider comfort; they have suspension forks and seat poles for a smoother, plusher ride, a wide comfortable seat and raised adjustable handlebars that are easily adjusted to suit the rider. This positioning of the handlebars helps you maintain an upright posture while at the same time reducing unwanted pressure on your wrists, arms and shoulders. If you are looking for a comfortable relaxed style of bike to cycle along the waterfront or local bikeways, this is the bike for you.

Commuter: The Commuter Bike is the last of the Hybrids. It has been designed especially for those who commute. The Commuter typically comes with derailleur type gearing, however we are starting to see more models coming through with internal gear systems. Internal geared bikes generally require less maintenance making them easier for people with busy lifestyles and a lack of interest in bicycle mechanics. Both styles typically have stronger wheels with lightweight, puncture resistant tyres. Commuter bike frames come with all of the appropriate mounting points for attaching baskets, pannier bags, mudguards and water bottles.
