Road Bike Cycling Shoes
Cycling Shoes are shoes that are built specifically for Cycling. Road Bike Shoes generally have a smooth, rigid inflexible sole which is slightly bent at the ball of the foot. They are very light, with a thin sole and external cleats. These shoes should be used for minimal walking as they are awkward to walk in and the shoes and cleats can easily be damaged.
When purchasing Road Bike shoes you need a good fit. Generally speaking, we recommend that you buy a road shoe that is approximately half a size smaller than your normal size to ensure a snug fit. If your feet slide around in the shoe, you need a smaller size. Look for breathable materials... when your feet start to sweat out on a ride, a shoe that is made from a moisture wicking material is highly recommended. These materials draw the moisture away from your feet so that they don't slip around in the shoe.
It is a good idea to have a practice with your new shoes and pedals before you venture out in to traffic. Set yourself up on a home trainer and clip in and out until you feel comfortable. If you don't have a home trainer, find a quiet back street and ride up and down and practice clipping in and out. When you are comfortable doing this, and decide to hit the traffic, unclip one foot while riding when approaching traffic lights and junctions so you have plenty of time to before you have to stop. There is nothing worse then suddenly having to stop at a set of lights and not getting your feet unclipped!!
