You can buy bike tools individually or as a complete set. Buying a basic tool kit is a great place to start if you are going to start servicing your own bike. There are several different kits you can choose from and they are all made up of different bike tools but most tool kits will provide you with the basics. Tools you find handy when you start out are; a chain breaker, cone spanners, crank puller, chain whip, freewheel remover, tyre levers, allen key set, shifting spanner, screwdriver, spoke tool, puncture kit, pedal spanner and headset spanner. These sorts of tools are commonly needed for general repairs and servicing. Tool kits generally start around the $100 mark.
Specialty tools like headset presses, bottom bracket taps and disc mount facing tools are not the sort of thing that you use every day and require an experienced hand to do the job properly so if the time comes and you are considering adding a specialty bike tool to your collection, think about the likelihood of needing it more than once as it may be cheaper to have an experienced bicycle mechanic do the work for you..
